The Wood Technology department's Carpinteria Fina program at Laney College in Oakland, California combines English language (ESL) skills and real world technical skills in wood-working. The program focuses on technology in the field, computer skills, the paperless work environment, production, and digital design proficiency. The Wood Technology department offers the two-semester program in a state of the art wood working facility located in G-151.

The first semester students have two projects that they work on throughout the first semester in the program. They create a tool-box and a stool which they take home with them at the end of the semester.

During the second semester students begin work on their community project. In the past they have also contributed projects such as the break-room cabinets at the English Center in Jack London Square. The program last year built a circulation desk for the library at Lighthouse Community Charter School in Oakland. This year the class is building a new reception desk for the Laney Cosmetology department.

Other programs similar to the Carpinteria Fina program require students to take a series of ESL classes before they could begin to learn the skills that the Carpinteria Fina program offers from day one.

The program is not limited to ESL students. Students of all levels are welcome to enroll in next semesters courses: First level is Wood Tech 271 #41198 and ESL 275 #41513  or the second level Wood Tech 272 #41200 and ESL 266 #4402
